Paid Parental Leave (PPL)

Understanding Paid Parental Leave 

·        Paid Parental Leave takes effect upon the “birth” of a newborn, biological child, Placement of a foster child in state custody, or placement for adoption of a child.  Foster and adoption involve children under age 18. The event must have occurred on or after June 26, 2023 to qualify.

·        Paid Parental Leave applies to the parent or co-parent of any child as listed above. 

·        Paid Parental Leave applies to any employee occupying any percentage of a full-time equivalent position.

·        Paid Parental Leave must be taken consecutively in all cases except placement of foster care wherein it may be taken in weekly increments that are nonconsecutive.

·        Paid parental leave expires 12 months following the qualifying event, even if more than one event occurs.  Paid parental leave is also forfeited at separation of employment.

·        If both parents are employed, leave may be taken concurrently, consecutively or a different time as the other eligible employee.

·        Paid Parental Leave must run concurrently with FMLA and any other unpaid leave, but holidays or other non-work days may not count against the employee.

·        Eligible employees shall accrue annual and/or sick leave at the regular rate while on this leave if applicable

·        Paid Parental Leave shall not prevent the eligible school district employee from earning a STEP increase the following year.
